The cooling window-Shitol Janala(শীতল জানালা)

Site-responsive creative product design by Tanmoy Nandi during the 7th episode of Uronto residential art exchange program in Shukhair, sunamganj, BD.

This work by ceramist artist Tanmoy Nandi was designed to solve basic electricity related issues in “Sunamgang” area. Sunamganj at that time was a island with water everywhere around it and boats are the main connecting transport. It did not had electricity in nearby 20 villages or did not had any hope to have the electricity connected in next 2 or 3 years even.

This product is based on a simple mechanism of science. Nandi has used cooling property of terracotta as a key aspect to design that device. When air passes through those wet terracotta surfaces will reduces its temperature and carried some amount of moisture with it. Gradually the room temperature will reduce.  The bamboo structure will act as a water container and wet cloth will act as continuous water supplier. Another consideration about that device was to use local materials as much as possible also exploring local villager’s skills, in that way local people can create it easily whenever they want.

Tanmoy Nandi is ceramic artists currently working in India. He explores the potential ways of aesthetical functionality through his works. His passion for adding value to functional product through aesthetical innovation leads him to design products beyond the typical commercial range of functional products.
