URONTO ARTIST COMMUNITY

URONTO is an Artist-Led Open Collective in Bangladesh, founded in 2012, in order to enforce a new organic platform for creative practitioners and researchers from all possible disciplines to collaborate and enhance their trans-disciplinary works to inspire local and Global community. At the same time upholding their Artistic responsibilities toward the Society.

 

URONTO works toward making ART a strong tool to change the way people look at everything.

 

Vision: Storytelling, Research oriented Documentation and Cultural Exchange through Art.

 

URONTO is self-funded by the founding member since 2012. Gradually working toward creating a self-sustaining model by collaboration and collective investments.

 

URONTO affiliated with Art Initiative Bangladesh-AIB from 2019. AIB is an Artist Network organization based in Bangladesh.

 

Activities of URONTO:

URONTO Residential Art Exchange Program

Since 2012 URONTO is hosting site responsive residential art exchange programmes within disused or abandoned spaces and heritage buildings across Bangladesh.  URONTO’s activities not only provide much-needed opportunities for emerging artists to expand their working practice and collaborate with international artists but through each residency, they create an alternative documentation about the history of the selected site before it’s demolished and forgotten.Opening up new possibilities, through their activities URONTO raises awareness within the local community, encouraging action to preserve their own histories after URONTO’s activities have ended.

Workshop

URONTO organizes workshops locally and internationally with/for creative practitioners. Focusing on elements like: story telling through art, designing interactive artistic expressions, alternative educational opportunities, art therapy, creative skill development etc. URONTO works with various communities and disciplines. The workshop is usually open for multidisciplinary participation. Uronto also collaborates with schools, academies and institutes to conduct workshops under their co-curriculum activities.

Exhibition

URONTO organizes, participates and designs Art Exhibitions. URONTO had their First exhibition in Dhaka at the Dhaka Art Summit 2018. They design exhibitions for creative practitioners regardless of academic backgrounds and disciplines. They initiate small exhibitions in various rural areas to culminate a common genre about art in the localities there.

Design

URONTO does commission works in designing publicity campaign materials, publication, conceptual products etc.

Research projects

URONTO conducts research works with their volunteering researchers as per need.

Curation

URONTO curate/co-curate projects locally and internationally for individual or organizations. They prefer designing/curating socially inclusive projects and events out of conventional belts with challenging and exciting elements involved.

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Sadya Mizan is an independent curator and researcher in Bangladesh. She is the founding member and Director of URONTO Artists Community (2012). She is one of the founding trustee of Art Initiatives BD (AIB) since 2018.

Completing her Post-Graduation in Graphic Design from the Faculty of Fine art, University of Dhaka- BD, Mizan has been involved in various fields as a coordinator, creative director and project director in Bangladesh. Mizan has been a Dhaka based contributing researcher for the Asia Art Archive-Delhi. She is a member of the Artist-Led-Initiatives forum by Samdani Art Foundation and is honoured as one of the potential Arts-Managers from South Asian regions by the Art Think South Asia Fellowship (ATSA).

Being nominated for a research grant by the Foundation for Art Initiatives (FfAI), Her recent research which is supported by the Foundation for Art Initiatives (FfAI), is looking into strategic planning, inclusiveness and accessibility of art organisational models based in South Africa, South America (Colombia) and USA (New York); also extended to Germany and Norway.
