Rickshaw Art Project Public Seminar and brainstorming,

Come along and join @osch.youngpeople for an online workshop and Q&A on the rich history of Rickshaw Art and how Rickshaw Art represents South Asia following with a discussion about symbolism, motif, design and contemporary expressions of Rickshaw Art.

We are glad to arrange this session during the south Asian heritage month. To ensure  a participatory process of narrating rickshaw and its rich history in Manchester museum we arranged this session to have a larger open dialogue about the history of rickshaw in South Asia.

Bio of Speakers:

Souradeep Dasgupta is an independent researcher specialized in image processing and brushstroke analysis. His interest in color theory and art history enabled him working in the documentation of different forms of arts, and writing. Has been working primarily on studying and documenting the change in color compositions in rickshaw painting, and focused on the sociopolitical aspects in rickshaw art in Bangladesh. He is professionally working as the Project Manager of Arts at British Council Bangladesh.

Syed Ahmed Hossain, born in 1965 and currently living in Old Dhaka in Bangladesh. A self-taught rickshaw artist more commonly known in Dhaka as Ahmed. He is one of the most distinguish Rickshaw painters in current time. Ahmed never had any formal training in painting because his father could not afford that, he uses to draw things on his school hand books and kept the practice growing until he started doing rickshaw painting at the age of 12. After the India Pakistan Partition sometime around 1950 there was growing demand for people who could decorate Rickshaws and paint colorful vibrant designs on them. Ahmed found a livelihood through this opportunity where he could align his passion and support his family too. Through different commissions, his work has been collected in UK, China, Hongkong, Japan, Finland and many more countries by reputed entities.

Rafiqul islam is a very talented self thought rickshaw painter in Bangladesh, born in 1964 in brahmmonbaria. He started his career in rickshaw painting in 1982 when he was only 18 years old. He dedicated all his life to rickshaw painting and have painted more than 5000 sheet and more in his life.

Shawon Akand (b. 1976) is an artist, researcher, curator and entrepreneur based in Dhaka. Having trained at the Faculty of Fine Art, Dhaka University, Akand currently serves as a Director at Jothashilpa-a centre for traditional and contemporary arts. In 2007 he co-founded the Crack International Art Camp, an annual event inspired by Baul philosophy and running ever since. Akand has also established a research and resource centre- Ashru Archive, a non-profitable organisation based in Kushtia in 2016.  

Bishwajit Goswami (b. 1981) is a Bangladeshi artist and educator. He is an assistant professor at the Drawing & Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Also a visiting faculty at Architecture Department, Both in BUET & BRAC University.

Over the last few years, Bishwajit has been experimenting with various spaces and subjects. His extensive interest in art has led him to direct a handful of projects during this time.

Bishwajit introduced himself as a successful curator for his commendable project including `ROOTS’  in the 5th Dhaka Art Summit 2020; ‘Bindu-Bisorga’ in the 18th Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh.

Goswami is the co-founder of Brihatta, a research-based, artist-run Platform, with a strong focus on community development, and collaboration. He is the artistic director & one of the mentor of “Brihatta Home Art Projecrt 2020”.
