“Recollected” is a distinctive exhibition to showcase a range of multidisciplinary artworks inspired from the history, culture and the local contemporary narratives from two architectural heritages in Sunamganj district in Bangladesh, known as the Gourarang Jaminder palace and the Shukhair Jaminder palace. All these creative works are outcome of an art intervention organized by Uronto in Sunamganj in January 2024 where a group of artists from various practices visited the site, explored the current narrative and previous histories, got involved with the community in the surrounding of those little-known heritage buildings.
– a multidisciplinary exhibition with heritage narratives from Sunamganj, Sylhet, Bangladesh.
by URONTO Artist Community in collaboration with Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation.
This exhibition will serve as a vibrant showcase of contemporary artistry, focusing on the lesser-known heritage sites in Sunamganj, Sylhet. Through various artistic mediums like illustration, storytelling, photography, ceramic work, printmaking, installation, theater performance, musicals and many more, viewer can revisit the stories and memories within the heritage sites. Each artwork offers a unique glimpse into the lives and legacies of generations gone by, inviting viewers to rediscover and re-engage with the hidden gems of Bangladesh.
Architectural heritage is one of the strongest as well as variable components of a socio-cultural infrastructure. Bangladesh, being a substantial part of the ancient Bengal, has a rich history in regards to architectural heritage. If these heritage and history is not archived, it is lost forever with time. With demolishment of each of the heritage buildings our cultural root and history gets erased too. Uronto aims to archive soon to be lost narratives through artistic tool, celebrate cultural roots and raise awareness toward heritage buildings preservation by adding value through creative processes.
Through this art intervention and the group exhibition, Uronto is contributing in archiving these soon to be lost heritages of Shunamganj, adding new dimension to the local history and adding value to the sites which will foster the awareness in rural community as well as in the urban society toward the heritage preservations.
On the other hand, this exhibition is providing opportunities for local talented artist to reconnect their practice with local context and content and experiment with their contemporary skills merged with local cultural roots. Such opportunity is rare for local artist and this exhibition is going to be an example of how much the local contents can enrich contemporary forms of art practices and make a global impression of Bangladesh.
